Using jargon alienates people and not only does it confuse them even more, they feel stupid because, based on the fact that you know what those terms mean, they feel they ought to know too. That’s not a good place to be in, on either side of that kind of conversation.

Mom’s Best Advice
In high school I wanted to try out for the basketball team. I loved the game but didn’t have the moves. And I wasn’t tight with the cool kids on the team. I sweated the decision and started to chicken out. I told myself, You don’t really want to spend all your free time shooting hoops.

That’s when Momma said, When in doubt, do the positive. Can’t decide whether you should get all dressed up and go to that party? Don’t know if you should “intrude” on a new neighbor with a homemade welcome cake? Worried that an old lady would find you rude for offering to help her with her grocery bags? Do the positive! Go to the party, bake the cake, help the old lady. A life of doing is better than one of regretting what you didn’t dare to do.

Today, some people will celebrate the anniversary of my birth (i.e. my birthday).

I don’t necessarily care for my birthday or any day that results in me garnering additional attention.

As I was sitting around a few days ago I started thinking… “It’s not really my birthday. I only technically had one ‘birthday’ - the day I was born. So…actually, it’s the anniversary of my birth.”

As I thought about this for a little while longer and tried to sing “Happy Anniversary of your birth to you…Happy Anniversary of your birth to you…” something just wasn’t quite right. Then it just popped — it’s not my birthday — it’s the anniversary of my birth… it’s my ANNIBIRTHARY.

From this moment on I will now refer to everyone’s “birthday” as their Annibirthary.

On a side note - my friend Dylan won for the best email of the day, with this:

From: dylan
Sent: Friday, August 24, 2007 8:16 AM
To: ross
Subject: 27

Famous musicians who died at age 27:

Robert Johnson – Bluesman, poisoned

Brian Jones – Rolling Stones founder, drowned in a swimming pool

Jimi Hendrix – Guitarist, sleeping pill overdose

Janis Joplin – Singer, drug overdose

Jim Morrison – Singer, possible overdose

Kurt Cobain – Nirvana frontman, suicide

Thank goodness you aren’t a talented musician addicted to drugs.
